Collage a Coffin!

Building on the success of Eccles Death Café, I had an idea which becomes reality this month: a community cardboard coffin decorating event, now known as Collage a Coffin. The session takes place on 27th April, 2-4, at Eccles Library, and you can book your free place here: https://salfordcommunityleisure.co.uk/event/collage-a-coffin/

It’s a real collaboration. Salford Community Leisure are providing the space, Co-op Funeralcare are providing the coffin, Art & Soul are leading the collage side, Fred Aldous have donated glue and paint, Leaf, Bean, Pod are giving us a cake, and Kate Ramsey and I are leading the session.

The coffin will be arriving in style by hearse, with funeral directors in full regalia, so arrive early to see it being carried in, or catch up via Salford Media later on.

The plan is to create a work of art that will then be displayed at the library for Dying Matters week, complete with literature on death, dying, and bereavement, while talking all things death, and of course eating cake! It’s going to be a similar vibe to the Death Cafes but with added creativity, and other people from the sector to talk to: funeral directors and arrangers, palliative care nurses, and more.

So why not come down and see what it’s all about, and, if not, pop down to see the finished masterpiece afterwards!

The picture below is partly what gave me the idea: a stunning coffin handpainted for a funeral I gave by the deceased's daughter, a talented artist. This beautiful coffin is empty on the photo, and gives you an idea of what we might create at the workshop!
